Foundations form the lowest part of an architectural structure and are generally either shallow or deep. Foundations and their construction are also sometimes called base work, especially in the context of larger structures. Types of foundations include:
-
Shallow Foundations: usually embedded about a meter or more into the soil. Common types of shallow foundations are spread footing and slab-on-grade foundation.
-
Deep Foundations: used to transfer the load of a structure down through the upper weak layer of topsoil to the stronger layer of subsoil below. There are different types of deep footings, including impact-driven piles, drilled shafts, caissons, helical piles, geo-piers, and earth-stabilized columns.
-
Monopile Foundations: a type of deep foundation that uses a structural element into the earth to support all of the loads (weight, wind, etc.) of a large structure above the surface.
